Hi Guys

After having to postpone two test sessions – one due to weather; one due to my mechanic’s truck breaking down – I was going to go to Mallory Park without having tested my car to see if the problem I had at Silverstone had been sorted.
Only to be told that, on the day before going to Mallory, that I wasn’t going to be racing due to, after having brought new parts to fix his truck, fitting them and taking it for a test drive to make sure everything was working, his truck broke down again on his way up! – he hadn’t gone far 🙄😔

Well after that fiasco, I did manage to go testing at the end of September. I had a good day testing at Llandow, the car was handling well, even in the cold, damp conditions, the revs were running smoothly throughout the whole rev range, I had my fingers crossed for things to still be good for Pembrey on the 6th October.

Well, I made it to Pembrey for the season Finale. We had blue skies – with a couple of clouds – the sun was shining, and I was feeling relatively positive for the day of racing.20191006_074213

Qualifying: Position: 16th of 17th; Best Lap Time: 1:26.741
The track was a little damp in places still, but there was remarkably a fair amount of grip.
I went relatively easy to start with, to built up my confidence, and I gradually built up speed as the session went on.
The only issue I had was at the hairpin, with 2nd gear not having the grunt to come out of the corner like I have previously – and on a similar corner to one at Llandow, ie. speed into, round and out of the corner – so was having to play dropping down to 1st and quickly back into 2nd to get the revs to come out the corner.
Now I needed to think of how I was going to deal with this issue, either continuing with dropping down a gear or to try to carry a bit more speed into the hairpin.

Race 1: Position: DNF; Best Lap Time: 1:23.654
I got a good start, overtook a few cars off the line, had a good battle for a couple of laps, and managed to knock off a few seconds off the lap time, then…
…the gear linkage detached itself leaving me with no gears, so I had to pull off and end my race 😞.
It was an easy fix, so was ready again to fight again in Race 2.

Race 2: Position: 15th, 3rd in Class; Best Lap Time: 1:24.970
Had a reasonable start and had a bit of a battle with a few cars for the first couple of laps, then…
…the ‘hiccups’ started again when I revved beyond 5000rpm 🙄. The car then stalled on the back straight, I managed to restart it and the problem seemed to go away, but a lap/lap and a half later the problem came back.
Managed to finish, but not in the way I wanted – racing with the others, though I did get a trophy for my troubles 🏆20191006_180828

The annoying thing is, I know the car has the legs to fight with the others, I just need to get these niggling issues sorted out. We are thinking it could be an oil issue, with the oil we are using not coping with racing conditions.
A bit of work over the winter to be ready for next season.

Testing at Llandow

Hi Guys

Today I did 4-5 short sessions.
Not as smooth as last time out, the car decided to run lean and the top end revs were lumpy. We tried a few small tweeks which could be done at the track, unfortunately it didn’t cure the problem.

The handling was still good though, so there was a positive, even if a small one.

Fingers crossed we can get it fixed for Silverstone on the 11th August 🤞

Testing Session

Hi Guys

Today I went testing at Llandow. I did two sessions and did quite a few laps.
During the first session the car was a little lumpy on revving, but it still handled well – cornering, braking etc. It also overheated a bit due to an air lock.
During the second session the car performed a lot better, it ran very smoothly and still handled well.

I was going to go out again, but a pinhole was found in the dipstick tube, so decided to call it a day to be on the safe side.

I will be out again on the 1st August.
Fingers crossed it goes well ready for racing at Silverstone on the 11th August.

Testing – 8 April 2019

Hi Guys

After almost a year of not driving/racing my Ford Focus, I went out testing today at Llandow . The weather was chilly and overcast, though it started off dry it did start to drizzle in my last outing before lunch.
20190408_115325
Testing went well, felt great to be back behind the wheel of my race car.
The car handled fine and was running smoothly throughout the rev range, always important, especially coming out of the tight corners.
Have managed to get the seat into a more comfortable driving position, get in! no more neck ache.

Feeling positive for the first race meeting of the season at Pembrey on April 21st.

I will post about the race meeting when it happens.

In Other News:
I went to see Nightwish in December, they were epic, even with their new lead singer Floor Jansen. The balls of fire gave off so much heat, I could feel it from quite away from the stage! 🔥
It was so good I was lulled into going to sleep part way through or it could just be my age 😅

I’ve been for a couple of runs and bike rides, when the weather has been nice.

I did the sound for the Panto – Goldilocks and the Three Bears; it had a circus theme to it. It went really well, even though I had a lot of music and sound to play throughout the whole thing.

I supported my sister in her 5 mile run around Blenheim Palace – completing the OX5 run in 55 minutes, beating her previous time by 6 minutes. So proud of her 😎 💪
20190324_114058We will both be doing the 10k Inflatable Obstacle Run at Bicester in September.

I’ve also been doing a lot of baking.

Battenberg Cake; Chocolate, Honey & Banana Muffins; Banana & Raisin Tea Loaf; Oaty Banana Muffins with Nutella; Mocha Swirl Blondies; Ginger & Dark Chocolate Cookies; Banana, Chocolate & Coconut Loaf.

I’m also still doing my regular fitness classes as well.

That’s all for now. Roll on some warmer weather and a good year of racing.

Hi Guys

I went testing again at Llandow on Thursday in my Ford Focus.

Well that was an interesting test session.
I’m getting more confident in the car now, the handling, balance and the power out of the car still is good, but my session was cut short due to the clutch/driveshaft breaking .
These things happen, and yes I know it seems to of happened a lot to me in recent times, but being on such a tight budget and prepping a new car can have an effect on what can be done at any one time and take longer to rectify problems.
I hope I can get these niggly little problems sorted out during testing, so by the time I make it to a race meeting all will be good to go.

The next time I’m out in a race car will be at Donington Park on the 29th in the Peugeot 106 that I’m hiring out from Tyrone.

In other news:
I passed my Taekwondo grading today  I’m now a red belt!  I was so nervous beforehand.
20180721_132919Though I have sustained a slight injury to one of my toes on my left foot – I bruised it during some one-step sparring. I’m just hoping it calms down enough for me to go racing next weekend.
I would also like to say well done to the others grader for passing their grades.

I think that’s it for now, and I will post again after my race meeting.

Test Session at Llandow

Hi Guys

I went testing at Llandow on Thursday in my Ford Focus.

The handling and balance of the car was pretty good – good hold on cornering, good power out the corners and down the straights and no heavy nose diving under braking.
Though I did end up overheating the brakes slightly and the exhaust gasket was starting to go, so had to call it a day a little sooner than hoped, but I still managed to get a good idea of the car’s potential.

Need to adjust the seat to a more comfortable driving position, bleed the brakes and replace the exhaust gasket.

I’m looking at a couple more test sessions again at Llandow in the Focus, to give me confidence in the car’s reliability, before going out racing in it, hopefully the last two Pembrey rounds, and the potential Castle Combe round.

So I’ll be racing the Peugeot, which I tried out at Donington Park at the French Car Show, at Donington Park on the 29th July.

I will post about my test sessions and race meeting when they happen.

French Car Show

Hi Guys

I was invited up to Donington Park yesterday to the French Car Show by Tyrone and Fabio to try out their Peugeot – which they are hiring out for racing.
20180707_130100
As it was a track day style event there were time slots for going out. I was in the 1-3pm time slot.
20180705_173348
Before being allowed on track I had to sign-on and have a drivers briefing.

Blue Band-Drivers Briefing; Pale Blue Band-Entry into Event; Yellow Band-Sign-on

It was a hot day ☀️ 🌡, so getting all kitted out in my race suit and helmet was a little warm. I had two outings in the Peugeot, once in the first hour and once in the second hour, though I was out only for a few laps each time, it was enough for me to get a feel for how the car handles and get accustomed to the track again, after 8 years!
Donington is a great track, as it has undulations, it flows from corner to corner nicely and a track you can really push on.
First session out, Tyrone did a couple of laps with me in the passenger seat, so I got a feel for the car and track, then I got in the driving seat, with Tyrone in the passenger seat.
I’ve been so use to power assisted steering, that it was a bit of a shock when I found the Peugeot didn’t have any, though I slowly got use it.

Letting the car (Tyrone and myself) cool down before going out again, as it was so hot out there.

Second session out, I got straight into the driving seat, with Tyrone in the passenger seat. I was getting a bit more use to the car and how it handled, so was able to push a little harder, but I still had to watch out for the other cars on track – some going slower and some going quicker.

I want to say thank you to Tyrone and Fabio for allowing me to drive the Peugeot, it was fun to get back out on track and especially on one I love.
I had an enjoyable day, even if I did get all hot and sweaty.

I will be out at Donington Park at the end of the month, for my first race meeting of the season.

In the meantime I will be having a test session in my Ford Focus at Llandow in the coming week.

New Season 2018

Hi guys

Sorry about the long gap between posts. I haven’t done much really, certainly not on the racing front so far.

The season so far consists of a test session at Llandow in March, trying out a Ford Focus to replace my MG ZR; and missing the first race of the season at Pembrey.

The test session at Llandow went well, beautiful blue skies and sunshine, and managed to get a good feel for how the Ford handles – the Ford was still in full road legal state, so couldn’t push as hard or for as long as I would of done normally – but I still did a reasonable session in it.

The first race meeting of the year was at Pembrey in April. I ended up missing it due to having sold my MG just before and the Ford wasn’t yet ready for racing. I kind of knew this might happen as my MG was put up for sale in February/March time and someone became interested in it quite quickly, and not long after that put down a deposit on it.

My first race meeting of the year (second one for the Welsh Sports and Saloon Car Championship (WSSCC) will be this coming weekend at Oulton Park, barring any late onset problems with my new car, I will be out racing with the guys again.
Fingers crossed all will be well.

Race dates this year:

  1. April 22nd Pembrey with Trucks
  2. Saturday May 12th Oulton Park International Circuit
  3. June 10th Pembrey with Citroen C1s
  4. July 29th Donington Park National Circuit
  5. August 19th Pembrey with MSA Time Attack
  6. Oct 14th Pembrey with Trucks

With a possible race meeting (non-championship) at Castle Combe in September.

Well that’s it for now, I will post again after the race at Oulton Park.

Hi guys

I went testing on the 4th of October at Llandow. It generally went well. It was cold, but dry, I didn’t really get any heat into the tyres, so it was a little twitchy round the corners at times. Also didn’t know how done in my air filter was. The first couple of sessions out, the car didn’t really pull out the corners as well as it has done, and was a little hesitant to get up to top revs, Tony took the air filter off and… WOW! What a difference it made, the revs ran smoothly throughout the whole range, with no hesitation, plus I seemed to have so much power I didn’t know what to do with it all – which was interesting with limited grip. The new air was ordered and fitted to the car ready for the race meeting. I had lots of fun and came away with a big smile on my face 😆 I was hoping it would be the same for the race meeting, but…
llandow-testing-04-10-16

I had an early start on the Sunday, having to get up at 4am 🙈. Got to the race track in good time, but trying to find where the Welsh Sports and Saloon Car Championship guys were, well, was interesting, as we happened to be spread out all over the inner paddock.

We had a mixture of intermittent heavy rain ☔ and sunshine 🌞 equalling rainbows 🌈 (and not just in the sky).
Well racing didn’t go to plan, I was all geared up, and feeling really pumped up for a great day of racing, but my little car decided otherwise. The head gasket blew on the 2nd lap of qualifying. I first knew something was wrong when smoke started filling up the cockpit and then looked out my wing mirrors saw smoke coming out the back of the car as well. I managed to get back to the pits, very slowly mind you, and Tony lifted the bonnet and told me it was terminal and that the head gasket had gone. I slowly drove into Parc Ferme, then back to my paddock space. The worst thing of all was that the car was feeling good before the problem occurred.
This resulted in the end of my race weekend 😔 and any chance of scoring some decent points. It was so frustrating, especially as I had had such a positive test session.

On my way back home, me and my dad decided to stopped off at Coate Water for a nice walk in the sunshine, to enjoy the afternoon, after such a disappointing day.

Lots to do over the winter to get the car reliable and competitive, though I will come back (hopefully stronger) and fight hard in 2017 💪.

Round 4 – Pembrey (21-08-16)

Hi guys

I went testing last Monday at Llandow 🚘 and it was pretty successful, the car was running nicely, handling well, no major issues, just a couple of hiccups though with the exhaust falling off (easily fixed) and I had a small spin though the grass, which I’m still not quite sure what exactly happened to cause it.

On to round 4 of the Welsh Sports and Saloon Car Championship. We were guests at the Vintage Sports-Car Club Meeting for The Welsh Speed Weekend. There was 29 cars on the grid for our championship this weekend.

Qualifying – Position: 29th; Lap Time: 1:21.71
The track being slippery, plus coldish tyres equals interesting session. There was also a red flag part way through and with extra oil was put down on the back part of the track which made it even more interesting. I didn’t have 100% confidence to push as hard as I would have liked due to the conditions of the track. At the end of the session I lost all response of the rev counter and speedo, which was a little worrying though. The weather was nice though, dry and sunny ☀.

Race 1 – Position: DNF
The rain came down 💧☔ so we decided on putting on my pink rimmed front tyres, as they have a bit more tread on them. They gripped beautifully ☺.
The alternator let go early on, which lead to no power and only just had enough grunt to pull into the pits, after about 2-3 laps into the race 😔. Also forgot to open up the back windows to let some air in and my windscreen misted up badly, so couldn’t see properly.
Trying to race when not being able to see and then driving into the pits was very interesting indeed 😕.

Race 2 – Position: NC
Another wet race 💧, though the rain was starting to ease off a little by the end. Had two batteries (car battery and battery pack) to run my car, it worked! Car behaved beautifully 😊 but my rain light decided not to work and I was shown the black with orange disc flag, so had to come in have it fixed before being allowed back on track, losing 3-4 laps in the process 😕. Though I saw the chequered flag, I wasn’t classified as I hadn’t done enough laps in total – only completed 7 laps, while the leaders did 14 laps.

A frustrating day, the wet weather didn’t help, but I think we have finally got all the niggles now, and the grip I had with the pink rimmed tyres gives me some confidence if it rains again in the final race meeting at Pembrey in October.

I will be out testing again soon. Hopefully to iron out, once and for all, all the problems I’ve had, and means I can have a race meeting without any issues and can have some fun 😊. Please let me have a good finish to my season 🙏.

Take Care & God Bless
